I have a old lt230 somewhere in the late 80's. It idles fine, but mid range it backfires and topend it doesnt even reach. I have cleaned the carb and have tried all the adjustments. Also put a new cam chain in and still does the same thing. Im not sure whats wrong, if the cdi is bad or what. The compression is great, tested on a compression tester, adjusted valves. I dont know whats wrong.

Have you tried running it with the air box lid off? Just to see what it would/might change?

 

try takin off the magnito cover and adjusting the points. i had a dirt bike that did the exact same thing and the points were not in the right positions

 

I have tried takin the cover off and the filter out but didnt make a difference. What is the clearence supposed to be on the points? Thanks for the help every one
