<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: atvman29 Many sites I've seen have claimed a decent power gain with the Reverse cone megaphone pipes.</end quote></div>
All I know to say to that is try a reverse cone on a leaf blower and check it out. I don't know why, but that cone turned around will blow right out of your hand if you loosen your grip. If you put a straight tube on the leaf blower, it will almost stay there by itself. Reverse cones don't work.
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Also, I understand that loud ATVs can bother people, but most of the locations where I ride in MN aren't close enough to people to bother them.</end quote></div>
That's cool then.
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>And not true about the sprockets, DK has 40 tooth sprockets available from Sunstar (80-659-40), Parts Unl. (8-911-40), and JT Sprockets (81-045-40)
Maybe a 12-40 or a 13-40? </end quote></div>
I guess you got me there. I was basing it on rockymountainatv, bikebandit, and places like that. I never shopped for a 40. I'm always a fan of the smallest sprockets I can get away with. For instance, if I liked a 12/40, I would get a 11/37. Or, if I liked a 13/40, I'd get a 12/37. Those are the same ratios, but less chain and the smaller the front sprocket is, the less the friction from the chain will mean to the engine... And therefore more power to the ground. So, that's probably why I never shopped for a 40. I just bought a 37 off ebay a month or so ago. Haven't put it on yet, but I have it.

Actually that pipe wasn't a cobra, it was some other guys that he called a reverse cone megaphone.
there's got to be some benefit to the reverse cone because thats really all thats available for these wheelers. why would they make them if they didn't?

Its a gimick I guess. For years I've been reading that reverse cones don't work, but never really tested it myself until this year. One site I remember distinctly said "if reverse megaphones were any good, you'd see them on professional drag bikes, but you don't. Straight pipes is all you see." Or something like that.
On another note, I used to study horns and speaker boxes... You can design a horn to amplify certain ranges of frequencies. Maybe that's what the horn, er, I mean reverse cone is about? Maybe it makes certain tones louder? But certainly not the very low frequencies because that would require a horn the size of a whole quad.... Or bigger.
I know some Harley riders used to run reverse cones.... I always thought it was in an effort to be as loud as possible. I don't know, but if racers don't use them, there must be a reason.
The pipe in that pic is not a reverse cone muffler. Its a glass pack straight thru design. The outer shell just so happenes to be a cone shape. It could be any shape, because it doesn't matter since air doesn't flow thru the cone part. Its the volume and the cross-sectional area that matters. Large pipe diameter minus small pipe diameter determines the cutoff frequency of the muffler. A glass pack is very similar to a crossover for a speaker system. They have cutofff frequencies and attenuation rates (ie -6bd/octave, etc).

Get a photobucket or some online image hosting site account. Upload your pics. Copy the IMG link and paste it here. I know photobucket tells you the link you need to copy to paste in a forum. It will start with a [ IMG ]http: whatever. [ IMG ]

I use www.tinypic.com because you don't have to make an account and its easy. You just find your picture and upload it. then it gives you all the links you should need. Just copy and paste the one for message boards.

Photobucket has been pissin me off lately. It seems like everytime I log on, they've updated it to make it "better". But each time it gets harder to use. A year ago I could click a link in my favs, log in automatically, check-mark the pics I want to post, click one button, copy all the links in one stroke and be outta there in less than a minute. Now days, the links are hidden in boxes that fade in and out as you hover your mouse over the pics. It makes the whole process 10x longer. Plus, there is so much code crammed in the page that it takes a good minute just to load one page. I can download a small movie in the time it takes to view a few pics at photobucket. That's bad.
I checked out tinypic, but I don't think I can store pics there, can I? Or something.... I don't know, I signed up at so many places looking for a replacement for photobucket. I can't find anything that is like what PB used to be. I hate progress sometimes.
