Upgrading the Z400 performance...
#1
Ok, while I have my Z apart for powdercoating I'd like to upgrade the performance. All I have is a HMF slip-on, open air box, and 13 tooth front sprocket. I don't have the funds to go big bore (athena). This is what I was thinking, a full exhaust, base gasket, hotcams stage 1, and maybe a carb upgrade? What about a CDI upgrade? I mostly ride trails hill climb etc. I'd like to get more bottom end to mid range. Thanks!

Sounds like you have a good start in your list. I started with a pipe and air filter and added the DRZe base gasket and valvesprings, stage 2 hotcams. There was a very nice gain in power, more then the pipe/air filter gave over stock. I found myself constantly hitting the rev limiter, so I got the DYNA cdi.
If I did it over I would get the non-programible version Dyna cdi, because I almost never change my setting. From what I read the Dyna, Vortex, and yoshi are made by their companies. Dyna and Vortex adjust the timing curve, yosh doesnt. Almost all others are made by Procom, and the company that is selling them adds their name.
Are you sure you need low/mid power with the 13t sprocket? I think you might like both cams, but thats up to you.
For cams check woodwardspecialties.com they sell cams for ~$120 each.
For a future mod I would rec. a bigger carb, also gave a nice power gain throughout the rpm range.

Ok, so I'm checking into Hotcams intake (stage 1), base gasket, and CDI module. I was running the 13 sprocket but put the 14 back on recently due to the fact the teeth started rolling over. I'm just trying to upgrade some performance without "breaking the bank" because I still have to put tires, rims, chain, sprockets, handlebars...the list is getting bigger! Thanks for the advise!

If you are going to get a CDI I would suggest the Advantage Revbox. The adjustable one can be had from for about 170 and the non adjustable one for about 115. GREAT upgrade! Check out this site!!!

i'd buy a header for your pipe, or if you can't just buy a header then buy a full system, then the hot cams stage 1 intake and exhaust cams, then get a vortex ignition, then you might want to look into a clutch kit?...after you get all this you will have a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery fast z...well...compared to most bikes ou might see at your local park
