I have a '03 400 we run flat track with that is lowered. We bought a lowering rear shackel from magic racing that did lower the rear end about 2 inches. It wasn't enough for me so I made a lowering kit out of steel. It allowed me to move the upper shock mount 1 1/2 inches higher than the stock mount on the frame. That lowered the the back of the bike about 6 inches (in total with the lowered shackel). The only problem with using my lowering kit is....
- I had to turn the shock 180 degrees to alow for clearence of the built on rezy AND had to take off the stock airbox. Taking off the airbox was the best thing I could have done as it turned out... Once I changed jet to a 165/7 and adjusted the needle the quad really opened up... with the stock carb....
For the front I bought a lowering kit off of magic racing as well that lowered the front end plenty. W/out the extra lowering kit I made, the bike would dive into corners way to much just using the lowering kits I bought on line.
What else really helped with dropping the $$$ and buying the wheel spacers for the front and back tires. This way you can also reverse the front rims for an even wider stance w/out having buy new rims and/or mess with the valve stems.

Yes, I put an UNI airfilter with an outerwear on it inplace of the airbox. The lowering kit I made would put the top of the shock right inline with where the stock snorkel that leads to the airbox. The UNI filter fit right in on the carb and barely rested against the shock. I took the snorkel into the local bike shop here in town and found a filter on the wall with the same diameter.
I had alot of people look at my quad and say, "how'd you get it that low???" The ride was the same and still had the ability to adjust for traction. Another friend of mine that lowered a Z400 as well went to a 'bike junkyard' and bought several different shocks to do the trick. I believe he used an older 300ex shock. His was so low he had to move the silencer over because it would hit the brake caliper (no kidding). Problem was that since that shock was made for a lighter quad it would bottom out very quickly and he actually lost traction. Ended up just burning up tires in the corners.
Hope this helps.

Glad to hear you did well in your first race. Regarding the CRJ parts, yes, they are pretty good for the price. I'm running them on my son's Blaster and so far so good.
Last weekend at Hollister we blew up 3rd gear on the Z400 so the motor is pulled and being worked on at our motor builder. Asside from fixing the trany problem we're into:
high compression piston, hot cams, new ignition system, new valves, hinson clutch, & Magura clutch lever system.
And while the motor is out I'm planning on dressing up the chasis like my son's other race quads:
gusseted frame then red powder coated with silver and gold flake, black race fenders, new extended front end (either LSR 2+1, Houser, or Burgard). I need chrome and Houser doesn't do just chrome so they may be out. Does anyone know how good the Burgard A-Arms are??? I already have LSR on the Blaster and they work good once you get past the nickel and diming they do AND get A-Arms that fit. (long story there).
Once this site finally approves my photos I sub'd for my profile page you'll see my other bikes I've set up for racing. The poor Z400 was my personal bike and got left out the past 2 years from the goodies while I dressed up the Blaster and Predator 90 for my boys. But now that my oldest raced it this past season and officially took it over when I got my LTR450 the wife has no problem letting me dump $$$ into it now. I'm not upset at all since while I dropped $$$ into their quads I also dumped about $12k into my Road King---priorities.....
