Default oil change on quadmaster 500

I've tried google and searches here, but couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I just bought the 01 quadmaster and would like to do an oil change. It did not come with an owner's manual so I'm purely guessing as I go along. I have a Kimpex filter, and 4 quarts of Silkolene 10w40 semi-synthetic. I know on my vehicles I fill the filter first then install it to the motor. I notice on this bike the filter is "upside down". Do I have to worry about running the pump with no oil when I first start it up after the change? How much oil does my motor take?

While I'm on the subject of maintenance, how do I inspect my belt? How do I know if it's warn to the point of replacement? Is there a width measurement? What are some recommendations to good quality belts?

Thanks for the help,
