it doesnt matter what quad, the more air the filter is exposed to, more air flow there is available to suck in

yes, drilling a hole in the box will help, but one wont make alot of difference but several holes will

An increased flow of air in may improve the power somewhat, but if the air can't escape as fast as it can go in, the power won't increase much. And i beleive that the carbs may need to be rejetted to compensate for the increased air flow.

One sure will make a difference if it is 6" diameter, if it is 1/8" diameter it won't matter.

All you will do is let in more dirt & screw up your throttle responce unless you rejet & DEPENDING ON THE QUAD get an exhaust. See why we need more info.

I drilled 5 holes 1" in diameter and installed "uni prefilters" installed an HMF utility series pipe and a Dynojet jet kit this combination was effective, however just the holes in the lid did not achieve much of a gain if any. You really need to consider a pipe and rejetting if you are going to mod your airbox. You can see the airbox mod I did in my pics, but I didn't have the pipe and jetkit on at the time.

I am currently running with the lid lifted with about 3/16" gap all around with a dyno jet kit and no pipe. It runs great, but soon I will do an airbox mod with unifilters or such so dirt has a less chance to damage the engine.

I'm not sure what you're riding but i have the air box removed and a steel plate for a bracket to replace the original fitting. Oil soaked foam filter with a filter sock over that. All 18 of the lt 500's i ride with have been like this for years. I'm not sure if this will work for your application but i hope it helped.
