Default please help newbie on purchase

I'm looking at buying a 1986 Suzuki 230 quadrunner, two wheel drive, that appears to be in excellant shape but, I know nothing about ATV's and am begging for advice. The odometer shows 962 miles on it, I realize this means little when they can be rigged. The machine looks to be in great shape with no visable damage or leaks. Shift in all gears is smooth and the engine does not smoke. What else should i be looking for? It's for a 14 year old who wants to ride the trails in the woods and to use around the farm for utility work. Is 800 for it a decent price?

Thanks, I'll do that. It hadn't occurred to me to look for frame cracks.

That is a great price for that bike and it is perfect for beginner riders. I think you will be happy.

Thanks for the advice, I picked it up today and it is sweet. Runs well, no smoke and no evident cracks. The 14 yr. old is thrilled. Even "she who must be obeyed" is pleased with it. That's the final test that counts the most. Once again, thanks.
