Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

My son has a LT230. We bought it 3 years ago. It is a kickstart and the engine was rebuilt brfore we got it. The decompression lever was broke off thus never used. What a MF to start. Of course it is a clutch so when he would stall it out it was "Dad can you start this". Some times he was near me sometimes he was not. Anyway we now have the decomression lever so we are trying to figure out the starting procedure. Pull the choke out activate the DC lever THEN kick it? Is that lever going to go back to the off position by itself ot would we manually put it back to off? I rea;;y like this quad and it is great shape so we want to get it easier to start for my son. Any spark plug recomendations? My friend from work has it stripped down. How about a rear shock other than stock? I know there are a bunch of 230 guys on here. Thanks for and help!! Mike

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

Whats up man, i'll try to help you out a bit, i have a lt230 and the only part of your whole question i can help you with is about the decomp lever, use it to of course to take all the pressure out of the engine, like you said it stays in the decomp position, after your first kick which will be very easy due to no compresion in the engine will send the lever back to the normal postion. I don't always use the lever once the engine is warm no need to use it. Normally just use it when first starting the quad in the cold.!!
Hope it helps
Cheers

Paul

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

sup? my 230 has wiesco piston 10.5?? and shaved head its only hard to start first time of day but i mix small amount of castor 927 100-1 its not bad 4 me but i weigh 185lbs to use it you have to let it out sometime during your kick like half way, if you hold it in it will almost never start as 4 rear shock im thinking a 300 ex shock will work with minimal fabs

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

Thanks for the help/advice. I love that quad and I think my son likes it-just need some TLC and get used to the decompression lever. My son was 125 lbs 3 years ago and is now 193 so he should be able to get er done. We put a DG pipe,rebuilt/rejetted the card, put DG nerf bars on too. Looks great. Yellow plastics w/Blue hood. Maybe try to post pic. Tnx Mike

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

My friend at work just called me after working on the 230 a couple of hours this weekend. He cleaned the fuel tank screen,rebuilt/cleaned rejetted the carb, fixed the choke and decompr levers, fixed the thumb throttle, put in a new spark plug and guess what? It fires up on the first kick!!! Sounds awsome with the DG pipe. Still have some work to do but it looks like the 230 will be back on the trail after a couple off!!!

I don't really understand why you need the DC ? I totally disconnected the DC. Choke it, pull the cold start plug and it should fire up easily (cold). If it still has problems starting you might want to look at rebuilding the top end. It should be really easy to start, you should be able to start it even without using the DC ( I weight 185 and no DC ).

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

There were a lot of things that needed attention on this quad . 2+ years ago this thing was a MF to start. Now with everything clean on the fuel system and a new plug it is a 1 or 2 kick start job. What pug are you using in it? Thanks for the help guys!

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

I got a quick question to add, mainly in reference to the last post about taking off the decomp lever, does it affect anything, i got a freshly rebuilt motor and i'm going going to change the spark plugs once i get home. So is it all right to take of that lever and also waht is the cold start plug that you are talking about. I haven;t heard or even used one can you tell me a lil about it. Cheers

Default LT230 Question about starting/spark plug/shock

Paul,
on the left hand side of the carb you have the choke, well at the same exact spot on the right side of the carb there is a black pull plug. That is your cold start plug, when starting cold you pull the plug out. Also about the DC, I hated having all that junk on the handle bars so I totally did away with it. It doesn't really do anything so I threw it away, these quads aren't really tough enough to kick that anyone should need a DC. Won't hurt yours to pull it off.

Kodiak,
I'll look and see today, I'm not really sure what size spark plug I'm runnin' but I'll get back to ya.

Once again thanks for the help i'll be ripping off that lever right away cause same as you i can't stand the way it looks on there. Also the nerf bar project is on hold till we get a smaller die for the bender but once it happens i will for sure post some pics. My quad should be tottally done in the next month, with plastics, pipe and rims coming in soon! So again man thanks for the help!!

Cheers
Paul
