I'd go with the Z any day. Don't get me wrong. The 400ex is a good bike but the Z is alot better. Great suspension, good handling, good power, and liquid cooled. I ride trails also and reverse is very handy. I use it all the time. There no reverse on the 400ex. It sucks when I ride my banshee in the trails and I have to get off and move the bike. Go with the Z. You will not regret it.

Personaly, I didn't like the Z, again i do ride a honda so take this as you want. My buddy i ride with all the time has a Z. And yes he used to beat me all the time on top end, but when my ex was stock i could beat him off the line any day of the week. i didn't like how the front end looked when you sat on the Z, but again i'm used to the honda feel and look, questions like these always get bias oponions from each person. when i was lookin at buying my new 450, i went to the deal and sat on both and bought which one i thought felt better to my style of riding and the position i sit while on the bike. and the whole reverse deal, wasn't a big deal, cause the ex was so light, just hit the throttle and spin it around. Let us know which one you get, either way you'll be happy with a new quad. Good luck, the Z or Ex or both good quads.

I've owned both and I slightly prefer the Z400 over the EX. The Z400 is a little more performance oriented, but the EX will certainly go anywhere you need to go.
If you are going to be riding at low speeds I would recomend the EX, it will really lug down unlike the Z.

I would also recommend the Z. Since you are buying used however, the market and how long you can hold out looking for that perfect deal are going to come into play. If you come across a real cherry 400EX at a reasonable price, buy it and never look back. It wouldn't hurt to study up on other sport quads either. Usually the original owner will correct some of the stock quirks from the factory and you can pick up something like a Pred or Raptor that performs better than brand new.

I have to agree with most, the Z would be the better choice, although a 400EX is a great quad. One thing I do like about the EX over the Z is the lower seat height. But the Z is just a notch above the EX in just about every aspect, so for me the choice would be clear, assuming the $$$$ factor isn't your top priority in deciding.
