shifting gears
#1
new member here. well i have saved just about enough for a down payment on a new z400. this will be my first manual trans atv. whats is the proper way to shift gears? do you have to wait til the atv wants to? or do i just squeeze the clutch when ever i feel like it and shift? your support would be great.

you cant shift just when ever you want because if your in to high of a gear then you will staqll your bike you have to listen to the bike and shift when it wants to. its a skill you will develop over time.

when your totally stopped, you want to start off at first gear. So kick it into first while holding in the clutch, and SLOWLY release the clutch when you want to get moving. If you let go of the clutch too fast you may possibly do a small wheelie. (happened to me and nearly crapped myself my first time hahaha). So once your moving you want to give it gas until the engine starts to sound loud. Then you need to shirft into a higher gear. Just hold in the clutch and shift. make sure you hold the clutch when you brake too. Manual clutches are extremely easy once you get the hang of it. But anyways, you wil know when you need to shift becasue you will be able to hear it. AND when your quad accelerates slowly you should probably bring it down a gear or however much it takes.
Have fun and stay safe.
