i recently started riding and when i went to the dealership they said a good starter quad would be a 400cc. So i bought it and i loved it and still do but now i am more advanced rider and i see 450's passin me by. So i want mods!! I hear that yoshimaura pipes are perfect for suzuki's! So do i get the TRC or theRS-3? And i hear bout big bore kits will it really help? What is a good kit for a z-400 i know there is a 440cc, 450, and 470 kits.

I to own an LT-Z- awesome machine! My quad is heavily modded although i dont have the rather expensive big bore kit, i would personally go for a FULL exhaust system (i have the alba kit- works great), a rev box, hot cams, a good air filter set up(k&N with outerware and no airbox lid), and most importantly rejetting the carb. I have this setup and i can keep up there with the big 450s. Another way to beat them is outhandle them, with a good suspension setup, widened axle/ a-arms and a good set of tyres you will be passin them as if they were 50'

I started with the 440 and loved it, I run the 470 kit now and what a difference it makes in HP over the 440
if money isnt an object send your motor to yoshi and have the 450 kit installed. theres guys on here that have done it
and really love it. and yoshi make a great pipe for the Z and it all depends on how much you want to spend

Yoshi 450 vs Athena 434.. My bro owns the Yoshi.. Both run on pump gas.. The Yoshi is the white one.. Each quad has Gliders.. The Yoshi is running a 21" 10 paddle and the Athena 20" 8 paddle.. I'm the guy w/ the C on my shirt.. Pulling Olds in 4th at redline w/ 14-40 gearing..

I spent close to $800 for my 470 kit and it is a bolt on.comes with new jug and piston and I already had the cams and the carb , the head was ported for the 440 kit so all I had to do was install it and have it rejetted
the yoshi kit is somewhere around $1500 I think. ask MURDR he had it done and he can tell you more about it

Yes just a 440 kit will help. Adding a carb will help even more and so will some cams. Having the motor ported will make the combo rip. Don't pay for a cheap port job. You get what you pay for.. Do not go to Trinity or CT. We had a Trintity 440 w/ all the mods and our DAB Racing machines absolutely waxed that POS Trinity junk!!!

I recently went the athena 440 (434) kit with stage II hotcams along with a dynatec ign box and 41mil FCR carb and I can pull 'relativley stock' 450's/660's. The new stock 700r's (efi) are still faster (as they should be). I even went down to a 13/38 combo because the front end kept coming up on my son way to much on dirt tracks/trails. As mucky stated - go the full exhaust system and get a good port job done. It does make a difference. One other thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is to get the DRZ base gaskets during rebuild. It adds compression... Since you will have to get new gaskets anyway it's a no brainer IMOA.
I've compared my Z440 to the LTR at a sand drag strip and found the Z400 will take my stock LTR till 3rd gear where the LTR starts to pull away.
