230S valve timing
#1
I just bought a 230 sport (86) and it wouldn't run. Looking in through the spark plug hole I could see that intake valve was opening up when the piston was coming up and the valve cover showed signs that it was off. So we pulled the valve cover, it was a DiD timing chain and a aftermarket cam and by looking at the lobes there was no way that it was put in correctly anyway I was wondering if someone could tell me the proper way to time the valves on this pig Id love to get it running I just don't have access to a manual yet please help me

make sure that the timing marks are lined up on the cam and crank and see if you can turn it and make sure the intake valve is open when the piston is at bottom dead center and make sure the exhaust is opening at top dead center. If it isn't then take the cam and turn it 180degrees but still having the timing marks in a vertical line and that shoudl do it. Then torque everything down to the factory specs.

Position the cameshaft so the drive pin hole is located up, about 11 or 12 oclock. The index marks on the end of the cam should be perfectly aligned with the top surface of the cylinder head.

Ya, richen it up (clean the carb or whatever) and see if the symptoms go away.

Hope it works out for you dude. I've been fooled in the past, but this thing is screaming lean. Let us know if it works.
One thing that worries me thought:
"Looking in through the spark plug hole I could see that intake valve was opening up when the piston was coming up and the valve cover showed signs that it was off. "

You can't jet with just a needle move. You have to jet with jets. The needle will only adjust mid range. And a very small amount at that.
To see if it is lean. pull the choke on just a bit and take it for a ride. Do the symptoms go away? If so, your lean. If it does not go away I don't know what to tell ya.
