Anything is possible but I would not go there first. As long as you got the key in the correct position you should be good to go on the stator. Everything points to a lean condition.
It's really tough to diagnose an engine over the net.
One thing is for sure, the intake valve should not be opening when the piston is coming up. When it gets close to TDC, sure, but not when the piston is coming up in the bore.

Ha ha ha ha.....ya, I know what you mean.
Sorry, I don't know about the stock jets. Someone else on here does for sure.
BTW, do a compression and see what you get. That should tell you a bunch.
