Default vinson auto or manual faster?

i'm looking to get rid of our old 300 honda 4x4 to find a nice used vinson 500. i want to know which one is faster up to about 45 or so. not just from a stop but from a roll on the trails too. anyone had experience with both? i know the auto keeps an atv right in the power band which is sweet. but you guys tell me.
we have friends with polaris 500ho and polaris 700 twin. i'd like this four wheeler to hang too.
p.s. loving the new brute 650i

Default vinson auto or manual faster?

I assume the manual would be faster since it says on the suzuki website the manual is tuned for increased acceleration and toruqe or something along those lines. Here are some results from a radar test of a bone stock 2002 Vinson as tested by some atv magazine.

0-20 mph 1.86 seconds
20-40 mph 4.09 seconds
0-40 mph 5.95 seconds
According to my own Vinson I can say theese numbers should be right as the Vinson picks up speed quick. I saw some numbers for the "Big Bores" some where and they are comparable to the Vinson. Grizz 660 0-20mph 2.02sec , King 700 0-20mph 2.08sec, Rincon 0-20mph 2.16sec , sportsman 800 0-20mph 1.86sec , Brute 750 0-20mph 1.91sec. .

Default vinson auto or manual faster?

For the most part.......Manuals are usually faster than autos cause you can wind them out further befor you shift.

just my .02¢

The semi auto is going to be faster 0 mph thru wide open / top end. The auto looses some power due to the power having to go thru the extra belt / pulley system before it reaches the tires. It looses this power and speed from bottom end all the way to top speed. I prefer my Auto vinson over the semi auto just cause I like the ability to just drive and be "lazy" about it.
After riding the autos for so long, when I get on a semi auto now days it just doesnt feel right. I actually feel as if it is a nuisance and cant wait to get back on my auto!

sure manuals lose less through drive train. but what about auto ability to stay in powerband and no shift time?

The auto does "automatically" stay in a higher RPM range than if you were lugging your Semi auto around, but most people i know with a Semi auto dont do that. They use there gears the same way the auto tranny works on its own. With the Semi auto you keep it in the good rpms while riding. Yea when dragging, you do have a very short delay when shifting with the Semi auto, but the extra power you have at hand makes up for that and some. If you are doing a "race" from roll on, you arent going to be in 3rd gear on the semi auto and only going 5 mph, you are going to be in 1st or 2nd, that way you are in your best gear. Machine for machine the semi is going to smoke the auto, dead stop drag, roll on drag, top end speed, it doesnt matter. But i still prefer my auto nontheless.

I have an 04 Eiger Manual and I ride with a Vinson Automatic. I am faster from a stop, rolling and to top end. I also ride with a Polaris Sportsman 500 and have no issues keeping up.

The Manual is more work but you can maximize, or push, your RPMs to out perform an automatic.

Is your bike stock?
I also ride with a manual eiger (stock with bolt ons much like I have)and from time to time and the guy knows how to handle it. We race ocasionally on gravel roads or ponds in the winter and he has yet to get ahead either from a stop or rolling. Sometimes I give him 20yard lead or so and the result is the same. The Eiger is fast though for a 376cc but not near as quick as the Vinson Auto or Manual. My gf just read your post...she laughed and said "that guys Vinson must have dirt in the carb or something because the Eiger isn't faster than the Vinson" I should get her to take some video sometime so you can see for yourself.
