I have a 2005 LTZ 250 and the bike only run with full choke. Anytime I release the choke, it completely stalls out. I've dissasembled the carb and cleaned it (now soaking), but would like to know how exactly to clean the carb.... I remove the three pilots from the bottom and sprayed in every hole I could find. How can I be sure everything is clean, especially the three tiny holes in front and one behind the throttle plate. Could someone school me on what exactly the holes do and how the pilots work? This may help me to figure out the problem... thanks!!!!!

 

The pilot jet is still plugged. The hole is very tiny, and pluggs easily. There are lots of online articles on the how to of carb cleaning.

If the pilot jet plugs, could the ATV run without the choke at a high idle? I'm able to run without the choke with a high idle.... anything lower, it stalls...

 

Where is the air screw on the 2005 Suzuki LTZ 250? I can't find one!

 

I found the air screw... should I adjust this at all?

 

If you even open the throttle a bit..which is what the high idle does, then the mixture is being provided by the slide cutout.
Running on choke only, and dying when turning the choke off, is a classic symptom of a plugged pilot jet.
Either get a brand new jet, about 6 bucks, or make sure the center hole in the pilot is clear.

 

Ok... makes sense.... I'll take the carb apart again today and clean the pilot thoroughly.... I soaked it in cleaner and used compressed air for about 10 minutes on the pilot... maybe I'll use a thin wire this time. Thanks for the help!! It definately makes life easier.... Think of the pilot jet as being a drinking straw, and when its clean, you should be able to hold it up to the light, and see light coming thru the center hole. If you cant see the light coming thru...its still plugged.
I think either a single strand of 20 gauge stranded wire, or 22 gauge should slip thru it. The deposits can be very stubborn, and if you cant clean it...toss it and get a new one.

 

Cleaned out the pilot and the ATV runs like new... idles perfectly and sounds great!! Thanks for all the help....
