Eiger 4 wheel drive not disengaging
#1
I have an '04 Eiger 5 speed.
Yesterday while ridding my 4 wheel drive was not completely disengaging. I started to hear a whine from the front shaft and a clicking.
If I lift the front end up and spin the tires I can get it to release.
I changed the front diff oil and tried to adjust the 4 wheel engagement cable.
The service manual said to adjust the cable out while in the 4 wheel drive setting until finger tight then go one more turn. I am assuming that is stretching the cable to tighten it. It is better but is still not back to normal after putting it in 4 wheel then trying to take it out. I am going to play with the cable adjustment today to see if I can improve it.
I am not sure if this is really doing any damage, just staying somewhat engaged.
If anyone can confirm the cable adjustment, offer any other suggestions, or let me know if this could cause more damage it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

One possible cause that can be checked quickly and easily: Open up the 2wd/4wd lever on the bars. Inside there is a small white plastic cam. If it breaks, it will default to 4wd. Easy to fix but the entire assembly must be replaced - runs $80 to $90 IIRC.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look at the 2wd/4wd lever.
The adjustment is on the cable connected to the 2wd/4wd lever. There is a rubber fitting and if you move that there is an adjustment on the cable.
I played with the adjustment yesterday and it sounds better but only had time to drive it up and down the driveway. I hope to ride it today to confirm it is fixed.

hmmm.... I'll have to check that out again. I thought I looked there a couple years ago looking for that adjustment. I've just gotten used to dealing with 4wd not disengaging right away.

Well woop-dee-doo. There it was all along. Kind of a strange cable adjuster, and counter-intuitive that you LENGTHEN the adjuster to shorten the cable... not really sure how that works, BUT it works. Now I only have to drive about 3 feet before it disengages. That's going to be nice.
