for a basically stock engine what is the best pipe for a 87 LT500?
ive been looking at the Trinity Stage 4 pipe, the PTR pipe and the FTZ racing pipe.

FMF is the best bang for your buck I think.

fmf might as well be stock. LRD pipe which isnt made is one of the best. next in line would be paul turner pipe. If you cant find either of those the DG pipe is much better than the FMF. I had a DG on my zilla and it was great. FMF is almost the same bend as stock if your going to buy that at least buy the DG pipe.

PM Dr. Q (RK on these forums) and get on his list for the next batch of pipes.... Don't waste your $$ on ANYTHING else!

(This isn't a mass produced run of the mill POS pipe... It's well worth the $$ and the wait)

FMF is better than DG, and the Paul Turner didnt seem like it made that big of a difference. I had them all on my LT500 my friends.

Hi,
I have tested nearly every pipe known to man for a Zilla and built/tested at least 20 different versions of my own over the years.
Here's a basic overview of what does what:
1) FMF, good bottom end/mid range pipe for stockish motors
2) PT, better mid and top end for medium ported motors but stinger is too small for well built motor and can cause seizures if not jetted richer.
3) FTZ, I'll let others who have one speak as I have nothing positive to say about them.
4) LRD, adjustable to put power where you want it.... not a ton of torque.. best of the rest by far...not cheap either.
5) Trinity/ PPs, pulls good on the top, torque curve doesn't match the HP curve and some people burn their leg on it.
All of these pipes were designed in the late 80s/early 90s.
6) DR Q...... I'll let those that own one speak for theirselves, but I can say it's the best LT500 pipe I have ever built........... not cheap but you "more than get what you pay for".
If a bike can pike up 2 tenths in only 100 yards over an LRD pipe and a BIG guy on a stockish 89 LT500 can power wheelie in 4th gear, what does that tell you?
Remember on a 2-stroke, the pipe is the supercharger and we are a lot smarter about 2-stroke pipes than we were in the 80s...
A mild motor w/the right pipe will kick the s--t out of a high dollar fully built motor w/the wrong pipe.
Good luck,
RK

hey Pumpkin

you have run both DG and FMF pipes. at the same time I had a DG on an 89 zilla and my buddy had an 87 with an FMF. His was stock bore mine was .020 over. other then that they were both stock. and basically the same. both were jetted good and had good compression. his was a bit smoother power but mine definatly had better hit and more power than his. Not saying its better then PT or LRD or those other better pipes but I think its better than FMF. I really havent seen many people who had one on there zilla. Mine came with it thats why I had it I wouldnt have gone out and bought it with the other choices but im just curious what experience you have that makes you think the DG is better than FMF. I mean I didnt dyno them I just have subjective experience. Im just curious
