If you purchase a z400, you are buying what people are selling to step up to the 450's. My brother has a z400 and he loves it, but my 450 smokes him. the z400 is a great trail bike and is very reliable, but if I were going to the dunes, I want the torque of the 450. If you like the Suzuki, pick yourself up an LT-R450 (like I did) and be happy...

going from a blaster to a piped Z400 is actually a big step, youll be happy with the power, and it would be alot cheaper than buyin the new 450's ($7000+) unless you really want to fork over that much money and absolutley need that much more power, than the new 450's are a great choice

I'd go with the Z, but I have a biased opinion, since I've never ridden a 450. I will tell you that my Z does excellent in the dunes. As you already know, it is a great all around machine that can do anything the 450's can, just a little slower. Good luck

I have ridden on hte z and its comfortable and i really like it and its true it CAN do everything a 450 can just something slower and others faster like tunring around. But i am in tucson arizona. Missing ak tho but not the cold weather in fairbanks lol. But im riding in dunes and stuff here so yeah. I like it a lot. My friend here says that sand is my new black . Where do u ride in ak at. i went tru white horse to get down here in the 48. but thats a good long drive to ride in ak lol.

You have a great question; remember that sand is the greatest robber of power (other than mud) there is. Your looking at $1500.00 difference between the Z400 & the LTR-450. The question you have to ask yourself is are you going to be satisfied getting wipped badly up any of the competition hills ? Mt best friend has a 04 Z400 and after at least $3000.00 (440 big bore, crower cams, port&polish, pipe, air-filter, jets, gearing..etc.) It just now can run with the slightly modified 450's. Don't get me wrong the Z400 is a great reliable do everything quad; but if you intend to do anything competetively for fun or otherwise, your going to get beat pretty badly. I ride with lots of friends with lots of different quads and I've ridden them all. My suggestion is the Suz LTR-450. Go with the pipe, cherry bomb and race gas for sure. Sorry for the ramble, but to answer your question, yes the Z400 does great with paddles (simple Sand stars are fine) and this quad will go anywhere you want it to go; the only decision is how fast ? Good Luck and have fun
