yep, one of the first and easiest ways to tap open the power in any atv is a new exhaust system. however which system you choose may be up to your riding style or how much you want to fork over, i dont have much experience with z400's so i cant give an answer of whats 'best'.

The first thing to mod is the engine breathing, not just the exhaust. This requires a low back pressure exhaust system, a K&N filter (or equivalent) remove the air box lid and most importantly rejet the carb to your new system.
Good luck

I'd start with the suspension. You can get Works with res. up front and rebuild your rear for $600.

Nerf bars, tether switch, K&N air filter w/Curtis Sparks foam pre-filter, Sparks,HMF, or Yoshi pipe(get a quiet pipe).
