Need Help LT250R
#1
I recently blew up my 86 Suzuki Quadracer LT250R. I am new to quads. I think I broke the cranksahft, mainly because the top of the piston is hit up and so it the jug. It looks like something went through there. The ring is bet, and I can't even kick it over. When I try to kick it down, nothing happens . . . so something might be lodged in there.
Heres my question. I have been on the internet a lot and haven't found much. I was wondering if anyone made a stoker kit for it. If I did break the crank, I don't want to build it to stock. Also, what is the difference in the motors between 85-86 and 87-92? I was under the impression that the motor is the same. Any help would be greatful.

Welcome to the forum, I doubt you 'broke' your crank. The only way to find out is take off the nuts on the base studs and wrestle that cylinder off. Have someone who knows what they are doing check the tolerences of your crank bearings. You might get lucky and just need a bore and piston (180 to 220 bucks)
GOOD LUCK

I had a simalar problem years ago with my 89.The piston ceized up and melted the ring into the piston and broke a peice off that got lodged into the exhaust port. That sucker would'nt move at all.Just try to spray some oil into the cylinder and let it soak and try to pry the cylinder off If the crank or connecting rod broke it will come out in peices along with the piston. It is highly unlikely you broke the crank but you never know.Once you get the cylinder off you will need a rebore or resleeve depending on how bad the damage is.just make sure you get all the peices out of there and that no metal fragments get into your bottem end .Or take the whole engine out and have a shop check it out for ya.If you need a new top end depending on damage you could get away with just a rebore and new piston-rings-wrist pin and gaskets.Or worse case you would have to rebuild the whole engine. But you really wont know till that cylinder comes off.I know that in 87 was the first year for the power valve in the lt250r.If your engine is fried maybe you could look into a used engine I am not sure if the 87-up motor will fit into the 85-86 chassis. But even still you could find an 85-86 motor on ebay sometimes for fairly cheap.Good luck man and let us know how it turns out...

First, the '85/86 motors are totally different from the '87+ ones. Piston size is different, different reed setup, intake, motor mounts, etc. You can't get the kicker to work at all because the piston is seized to the cylinder wall or the main bearing has seized. Your crank could very well be OK. As for the damage to the top of the piston and head, that is caused by little peices broken off the rings or piston, or possibly you sucked something into the intake. You should be able to salvage that motor, it might be a good investment to have someone go through it for you and jet it once it has been rebuilt. Do you know why it seized? What oil and ratio are you using in the gas?

I am running a 40:1 mix with regular gas. I am also using the Klotz oil, the synthetic with 20% castrol. I have gone through about 5 tanks of gas with this oil, so it might be that I don't know. I had an FMF pipe and silencer, 210 jey, k&n filter and an 11 tooth front sprocket and DiD chain.
The thing about it is, I got the cylinder off really easy. Well when I say really easy, I kinda had to work it off. The piston is hit up, there a little chunk missing out of it, and the ring is bent down in one spot, I don't know how this would. It almost looks like a bolt went through the cylinder. But all the bolts are on the quad, nothing in the exhaust, and I didn't see anyhting when I pulled the cylinder off. With the cylinder off, I can't even move the piston up or down. Wont even kick a little bit.
Im at a loss of what it could be. From what I have heard, I could have locked up the main beaing.
Has anyone ever ran stuff from trinity racing. A buddy of mine had an 86 with their stroker motor on it, and he said it was fast. Im looking into that right now, but I kinda want to hear from other people too.

If you are missing a piece of your piston , are you sure nothing fell into the bottem end ? Have your case split and find out , curious minds want to know

Is the chunk missing from the bottom or top of the piston? If the jug is off and you still can't get anything to move with the kicker, then it is likely the main bearing. This is going to get expensive, you are looking at a bottom and top end. Since it is going to be that far apart, might as well send it out to a shop and get some motor messaging done as well 40:1, even Klotz, may be a bit low. Suzuki recommends 20:1. I run 24:1. You can find plenty of peeps that will say they are using 50:1 with no problems, but I don't see much good in it unless you are racing. Then again, who uses an '86 LT250R to race? Don't take offence to that by the way, I have an '85

I havent had much time to work on it at all, with work and stuff. I know a guy that is gonna split the case for me, in trade for some work on his car. So hopefully Monday I will know what broke. Like scooter said, I think I locked the main bearing up because I can't kick it with the jug off.
I guess I know the limitations to a stock LT250R. Hopefully I will get some pictures up soon, so people who are curious to see what broke can help figure it out.
Anyone ever use any of trinity racing products? A friend said they make a stroker kit, but their website is down. Maybe I might get a chance to call them to see what exactly they make.
Thanks for al lthe help guys. I really appreciate it.

Well I finally got a chance to work on it at work. After further inspection, I found that a piece of the piston, (remember how I said one side of the ring was bent down) stuck between the connecting rod and the case. Hence the reason why I could not kit it over.
So as it stands right now, im gonna finish pulling the case apart, clean and refreshen up everything in the lower end and port the cylinder along with an oversize piston. Does anyone know of any good places that does a nice port job?
Thanks,
Sean
