86 230 QuadSport NOT playing nice

OK, I have bought what my girlfriend refers to as my "problem child", an 86 model 230 QuadSport. Most of the usual problems associated with old bikes that have been well abused have been fixed, and it runs really well. My problem is that it only runs well for about 15min, then just falls down dead. It is fairly easy to start ( usually 3 to 4 kicks no matter how long it has been sitting idle), Idles great (all day if u let it with no probs). If I ride it hard for a few min it dies as soon as i let off the throttle. I can keep it running by feathering the throttle, and it still has all the power and response as if nothing was wrong, let off the gas and it's all over. Once it has quit, (and I can kick til my leg says no more), it won't start again until it has set for 15 to 20 min, let it set and it will fire right back off 1st kick. Could this be a coil prob? Carb prob? Weak stator coil? Anybody ever have this prob, and what was your cure?

First I would check "ALL" tank and carb vents. This is a wild guess; but this is what I would go after first. Then I would tear the carb down and "REALLY" clean it good. After that take it out for a ride and see what happens.

Thanx Doc! Will do. Previous owner did a sloppy epoxy patch job on the case and cover where the chain came off and slapped it, I pulled the engine and did a hopefully more permanent and oil tight weld job this afternoon. Will most definitely give your advice a try as I put it all back together tomorrow.

mine used to do that, i went through about 2 or 3 stators off of ebay till it was fixed, so id say your stator is going bad. mine would run for about 20 minutes die completely, and wouldnt start back up till it cooled off about 10 minutes later.

Ok, got it all together this afternoon, carb seemed clean enough, jets were spotless. I went ahead and shot cleaner through all the ports, checked the tank vent, and cleaned the air filter. Fuel mixture was off a little, adjusted screw in untill I got decent throttle response off idle. I didn't get the chance to get out to the usual riding area, and it's been raining here for 2 days and yard is soggy, didn't want to tear it up. Putted around some, few quick shots up and down the alley, seems to be 100% better. Will get out where I can really open it up and play in a few days, will know for sure then if all is well. I have an old Harley that did almost the same thing this thing is doing, would run around town all day fine, get it out on the highway and 20 min into a ride it would die, always fouled the plugs to the point it would just quit. Turned out to be the secondary on the coil breaking down after it got hot, short rides around town never got it to the point of failure I guess. I suspected maybe a coil or stator coil on this thing, but the plug burns clean, leads me to believe it is getting plenty of juice. I am hoping these other guys are right and it was the carb, will know in a few days I suppose.

mine was acting up like it was getting wet,like water in system and would not kickstart hooked a rope to it and it fire right up run good and poop out.... had xtra cdi so i put it on but when i removed cdi kill switch wire had broken insulation and thinking this was prob but i changed cdi box so could be combo of both
