I havent heard of any z400 that the rear brake didnt squeal, I changed out the rear rotor to a vented one and the noise went away. as for rough idle check to make sure you dont have an air leak in the intake side by the carb, if not you could have something in the pilot jet or a loose jet, that what it sounds like to me

hi i have a kfx 400 and this sounds kinda like the prob. ive been dealing with. my first ? was it all gassed up when you purchased it.mine was a 2005 with only 4 hours or so on it. it would run just fine for a couple of hours. then it would cut out on me.it would take a little while to get it started again then it would idle but as soon as you would hit the throttle it would bog down and if you let it,it would die.you didnt mention that so im not sure if its the same prob. i had to take the carb apart and clean out the jets. then it ran awesome for about 2 weeks and started doing it again. the prob. on mine was related to bad gas. in the end i had to take the gas tank off and the petcock and clean it all. and if you go through all that its not a bad idea to put one of the k&n inline filters on the gas line. so if the dealer or who ever you purchased it from had it all gassed up for test rides this may be what your problem is. hope this helps you out.

kawasakifan,
My problem is exactly as you have described. Yes, mine was already gassed up at the dealer. When I asked to test drive it they could not get it started. they were like old gas in the carb and drained the bowl. It started right up after draining the bowl. I am going to pull it apart this weekend to see if I can find the problem. I will flush the tank as well. Thanks to all for your comments and recommendations. I update the thread late this weekend and let everyone know what the problem was.
