Does anyone know if a stock LT80 has a removable restrictor on the exhaust manifold or any factory restrictors elsewhere?

I believe there were some posts several months ago & there were two restrictors on the LT-80. The first restrictor plate was in the exhaust pipe & the other was in the carberator.

If you bought a brand new 80 it may have those 2 restrictors on it. When I bought my 80 used they were already off. They generally are. If you unbolt the exhaust pipe you might see a plastic restrictor on there, if not then it is already out. Same principle with the carbeurator restrictor. lata

I took off the carb and did not find any restrictor. I am the origianl owner of this 1988 LT80. Can I see the side profile of the exhaust restrictor without removing pipe?

The restrictor in the exhaust is a small washer. It just makes the diameter of the pipe smaller. You'll have to remove the exhaust to remove the washer.

raptor826,

You will definately know if the carb restrictor is in place. It is a brass spacer that sets on top of the main needle valve right where the throttle return spring is. This will only let the throttle be opened up about half-way.

I discovered this when I was backing out the throttle set-screw on my son's LT80. It seemed like I would back it out and it would not make a difference. We had just bought the quad and I was trying to make as little adjustments as possible, until we felt comfortable with the power.

What happens is, the throttle set screw is adjustable over the entire range of throttle control. The spacer in the carb, however, eliminates the second half of the throttle range all together. Therefore, with the spacer in, the adjustable throttle stop is only good on the first half of the throttle range.

I say you will definately know if the spacer is in the carb, because you will not have very much power at all. Just off of idle it will start to cough and sputter, sounding like it just won't wind out.

You can check to see if you have the spacer out by taking the cover off of the thumb throttle assembly. Push the throttle lever and see if it goes all the way through it's travel. If not there's a good chance that the spacer is still in.

If you take the spacer out, be careful not to lose the very small washer that sets on top of the needle valve. It will fall out very easily. Also be carefull to put the slide back in properly without it getting into a bind. It will almost go together 180 degrees out, or backward. This could cause a stuck throttle and could be very dangerous.

If the spacer is out, the throttle set screw opened all the way out, and it still bogs down on top end, not wanting to rev out, then remove the restrictor in the exhaust.

If this info was too basic, I apologize. I hope it helps.....
