LT 80-under powered...Help!
#1
My kids 2001 LT 80 ran awsome when I bought it used about a year ago. Was very well used when purchased but ran like a champ, except for a slow pick up. NOW it still has poor pick up and doesnt seem to hit its top speed any more. Clocked it at 25 with my Prarie 650, now it wont crest 20. Seems like it is winding out, but there is no power to the top end. Revs up but has nothing to show for it. I first thought that it might be a belt slipping at top rev. I changed the belt and the problem is still there. Also I test rode one (lt80) before buying this one and that one would stand up from a standstill, TOTAL POWER!!! Now this one, as the other one sold 20minutes after
I went to the ATM for the cash, is slow off of the line, decent power, but no pick up, decent mid range, no top end. I hate telling my son that I dont know what the problem is, someone please help this cash strapped father.........LT80, if you read this, please say you can solve it!!! de-coke the exhaust.
Unscrew the bottom bolt in the silencer and jack it up and run it flat out for a while. You should get gungy heavy oil coming out of it after a while and maybe bits of carbon. That may help....

the lt80 have a carb restrictor and an exhaust restrictor. if they have not been remove it may be your problem(not as fast as the first one you looked at). as stated these will cause carbon build up in the exhaust

I have not removed anything from the exhaust or the carb, although I would definatly like to take that task on as soon as I can figure out what the issue is with the high RPM's with no power to show for it. It has plenty of low end, mid range, but no gusto when the throttle is wide open, just alot of noise with nothing to show for it. If someone can tell me....The exhaust restrictor, located that the flange bolt on for the exhaust pipe? The cab restrictor, where do I access that? Do I pull the screw on cap and cable off of the carb??? How about the cluthes?Rollers? How do I check these myself to avoid robbery at the shops???

Carb restrictor: a brass ring on top of the carb slide that limits the travel (yes you unscrew the top of the carb)
Exhaust: a washer between the cylinder and pipe.
"Unscrew the bottom bolt in the silencer and jack it up and run it flat out for a while"
I agree with removing the bolt, but have better luck heating it up red hot (fire, charcoal, torch) and blowing air thru it to clean the carbon out. Carefull, you'll get flames!

You might also want to check your belt.If it is reving high and not moving it could be the belt slipping. And while you have it apart check your rollers. They get smushed and alter the clutch engagement .Good luck......
