Default Oil changing an '06 Eiger

Even though the manual says change the oil after the first 10 hours I usually do it at 5 hours and then again at 12 hours or so. I baby our machines with oil changes and air filter cleaning. If you ride in dusty areas and especially if you follow someone in the dust your air filter could need cleaning after just one ride. One thing I do neglect is the valve clearance but have never had a problem from it that I know of. The one time I did take my Vinson to get the valves checked, I don't think they did it but I got charged for it. It sure is hard to trust anyone that you don't know personally. As far as changing Eiger oil I actually remove the skid plate just to have less of a mess. I do not remove anything else. For the filter, I use the oil filter wrench with about 18 inches of extentions from the front. The 5 speed and the Automatic versions will use different quantities of oil. I use 20W-50 in Arizona because of the themperature and the long trips we take. 10W-40 should be good for you. Just make sure it is a "Motorcycle Oil" becuase it's designed to limit wet clutch slippage. I switch to Mobile 1 Synthetic Motorcycle oil after about the first 30 hours on our machines.

Thanks for all the info guys. One more thing, do you use use the highest grade of gas? Here in Iowa, we have 87 octane, 89 octane (ethanol blend), and 91 octane. I've been using the 91 non-ethanol gas. Is this what you all would recommend? Thank you!!!

Thanks guys. I guess I'll stick with the premium gas even though it's $2.85 a stinkin' gallon. Grrr......

Yeah, I hunt deer during archery season. Just a little Matthew's FX2 bow shooting Grim Reaper broadheads, but they definitely get the job done. I also do a lot of handgun shooting, but not for hunting.

Well I finally changed the oil. It was easier than I thought. I didn't take off any plastic I was able to get the filter off. I used a WIX filter and Valvoline ATV oil. I have 33 miles on the bike I couldn't believe the amount of metal in the oil. The drain plug magnet had a bunch too. I don't remember who asked in the beginning of the post but my drain plug was a 21 mm.

Did your oil filter make a mess and run all over the skid plate? I always pull the skid plate to change the oil on ours but we baby our toys and keep them real clean.

No I have a long narrow funnel it fits perfect under the filter. I let it sit there for 10 min so all of the drips went right into the pan.. Wiped down a few spots and thats it.
