2004 z400 cooling system problems
#1
i had an antifreeze leak for about a year and over this past winter, i replaced the water pump seal; which i presumed was bad. it leaked even worse after i replaced the seal. so i took it to the dealer where i purchased it from and $450 and two weeks later it was fixed. it needed a water pump. well before, when i had the leak, the fan used to come on all the time and then the engine temp light. well now its not leaking antifreeze but the engine temp has come on about four times and the fan hasnt come on once. does anyone have any ideas? does ur engine temp light come on before your fan kicks on? any help would be great, i plan on putting a couple thousand miles on my z this summer so i want it in tip top shape. thanks.

i've never seen my engine temp light come on. My fan will kick on after about 5 minutes of idleing..the fan will only stay on for about 20 seconds then go off. I don't ride in real warm temperatures, i ride pretty hard but not for longer then a couple hours at a time. Fan will kick on and off all the time, temp light never on.
i'd say something is wrong with your fan
i'd say something is wrong with your fan

The only time my temp light has ever come on is when I first start my machine for the light check. I've ridden mine hard in 100 degree weather in the sand dunes with no light....Seems like a problem to me

Yep i have the same problem. Mine is not fixed. Where did your coolant go, i never see any leaks. I know there is definetly a problem because if i fill up the coolant reservoir and ride it you notice a significant drop in the coolant level.

The cooling fan in the Z has a small hole @ the bottom of the fan motor, with a small hose attatched to it, witch if ya look @ it run's up 1st & not out, I know of 5 Z's that hav had the fan motor rust B/C the water stays in the motor & does not drain out... pull your fan apart I bet ya that thing is rusted tight!
