Default Engaging 4WD on Eiger

I recently bought a 2007 Eiger 4wd. The owners manual says to make a complete stop before changing from 2wd to 4wd. I have heard lots of people say as long as your going slow and not revving the engine that it won't hurt to engage it while moving. What are some of your thoughts on this? Just curious.

As long as you are not running under load or in a condition where the fronts are turning at a dfferent speed than the rears there will be no problem. To switch in or out of 4wd while on the fly, just back off the throttle and flip the 4wd lever. I've never had any issues with shifting this way on my '02 (or other quads prior to this one).

On edit: You definately need to come to a complete stop when shifting in or out of Hi and Lo range.

Exactly what jaybeecon55 said. Just make sure the front and rear wheels are traveling at the same speed before you flip the lever. Make sure you're not spinning the rear tires, or dragging them with brakes or the engine.

My dealer told me that the absolute best thing to do is to come to a complete stop. If that is not possible because you don't want to give up momentum, the best thing to do is let off the throttle so that you aren't reving the engine and flip the lever.

NO NO NO !

Its for safety!

The reason why you can't switch from 2 wd to 4 wd is a safety reason!

DON'T ANY OF YOU GUYS READ THE OWNERS MANUAL?

Remind me not to go riding with you guys!

I don't wanta see you wreck and get hurt and seeing blood all over the place and calling Life Flight!

Safty? Safe as in not grinding the splines on the two shafts. Other then that nothing else will happen if you do this improperly. I occasionally shift on the fly, but most of the time I'm in 4x4 when I stop and plan a route to travel.

Broke the 4wd shifter when I flipped to 2wd under minimal load. They finally replaced the crappy plastic block in 07.

hey notmuch69

i see you have 26 on your eiger. How do you like them and how wide are they? I was thinking of getting some soon to replace the stockers.

The 26" Mud Lites work very good and don't rob too much power. They are 10" wide on front and 12" wide on the rear. They handle much better and take less power than the 27" Swamp Lites on our Vinson. There is also plenty of clearance. I'm not sure how long they are going to last though on the rock/gravel roads we ride on. If you ride on dirt they should last a long time.

The only safety issue I could see is if you were engine braking down a steep hill dragging your back tires in 2wd and then engaged 4wd braking the front tires sending the machine over forward.
