Dirt bikes (2-stroke & 4-stroke) are exempt from emissions because they are manufactured as "closed competition only" products, meaning they are to be used on race tracks only.

Now, you & I know different, there are still many on the trails & private land, but that's why they(the 2-stroke bikes) are still being made.

The new Evenrude outboards are 2-strokes and have less emissions. Evenrude is tied in with Bombardiere (Can-AM) so you may see some on the market. I would personally like to see about a 400 2-stroke in a 4x4 quad...

Actually the answer is a great deal simpler than that. The real answer is that the government is just plain stupid. Someone wanted to propose some legislation to help the environment, not to mention themselves in the eyes of their constituents, and decided to attack the small demographic of recreation two stroke engines. The amount of emissions actually seen by these machines is negligible, especially when you point out that pine trees fail to meet the same emission standards as well. Huh, wonder what the 2 stroke to pine tree ratio is?

Umm... Spooky, you're lost. 2-stroke MX bikes are still being made. 2007 models are not the end. Like i posted before, but nobody obviously read it, 2-stroke MX bikes are NOT regulated because they are sold as "CLOSED COURSE COMPETITION ONLY" vehicles. Meaning technically they aren't supposed to be ridden anywhere but a race track.

2-stroke bike are going away ......

They are being killed by competition, not by the government...... There are ZERO 2-strokes running in the AMA MX Nationals or the Supercross, they simply cannot compete anymore....

They are not selling any at all, so the factories are scaling back, and mostly all of them have said by 2009 they will discontinue them altogether...

ss97, by competition you do mean 4 strokes, right? With the amount of R&D poured into 4 stroke technology, those thumpers should be able to fly. That said, a 4 will never be able to compete with a 2 cc for cc.
