Ever thing is going 4 stroke, even moto cross will eliminate the 125cc for the 250 4 stroke class and the 250cc class for the 450 4 stroke class eventually.

The only thing they seemed to not convert to a 4 stroke well is the "Chainsaw" because it relies on light weight with high power and high rpm which the 4 stroke does not do well.

slinger... of course cc for cc a four will never keep up but you cant put a huge cc 2 stroke engine in a bike. btw how long does it take to get a zilla started in the morning? ss97 i thought i saw a 2 stroke supercross last year.

It's already done.... they are calling it the Motocross Lites class, and since last year virtually every rider was on a 250cc 4-stroke...

Steve Lamson rode a 2-stroke for nostalgia in this season's opener. He said after the race that there is NO WAY to compete on a 2-stroke anymore in Professional Motocross....

There might have been ONE 2-stroke in ONE of the races .... But no one was qualifying on one, on a regular basis.....

ss97, by competition you do mean 4 strokes, right? With the amount of R&D poured into 4 stroke technology, those thumpers should be able to fly. That said, a 4 will never be able to compete with a 2 cc for cc.</end quote></div>

Yup....

It's true that they've put far more money and research into the 4-strokes in the last few years. But the 2-stroke had 20-years of development into it, and it was just about peaked in performance...

I think it comes down more to the 4-stroke being able to put the power to the ground better... The 2-stroke is harder to attain tractable power. They have such an explosive burst of power, that it takes more skill to get the power to the ground in varying conditions. In some conditions it is flat-out impossible.

The 4-strokes can be tuned to make more power over a broader range, and with today's electronics they can be fine tuned in amazing ways.

I hated to see the 2-stroke die.... IMO there was nothing cooler than the sound of 40 2-stroke 250cc machines roaring off the gate in an AMA Motocross ....it was like no other sound in the world ....

Thankfully, the new 4-strokes have kept the sport as exciting as ever.... and the new ones don't sound nearly as hideous as the old lumbering, popping, farting, low revving 4-strokes of yesteryear .........

Oh, no. 2 stroke technology was FAR from peaking. The truth is the ball just got dropped on that engine. Look at the 2 stroke outboards: cleaner, stronger, more efficient. My earlier pooint was tht if half the attention and resources were there for 2 stroke technology, and they aren't because of the government and no one else, then we wouldn't even be talking about 4 strokes right now.

And by the way bigned, the Zilla fires up easier when the motor is cold. Guess you really have no experience with 2s.

Not that 4 strokes are so great because the sure need one heck of a cc advantage to be competitive. If they even allowed a 300 cc 2 stroke to race with the 450 thumpers they would have to play catch up again.
