Is there any downside to simply putting a slip on exhaust on the quad? I've been told by a few people that a slip-on exhaust will lead to engine troubles. Does anyone have any insight on this?

a slip on is not much better than your stock muffler with the spark arrester removed ,
replace the whole exhaust system and rejet, and of course remove the air box lid . the only problem you'll have is its going to get louder . then ,your going to want more power and more power . the only problem with that is ,do you have enough money to pay for the power you want ?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm not looking for more power, but my quad has a slip-on with the stock pipe and I heard that it might hurt the engine. I called a friend that owns a quad repair shop in Cali and he said that the slip-on will not hurt the engine assuming that the carb is rejetted and the airbox lid removed.

I didn't want to hurt the engine and this was the first time that I heard this concern.

yeah if you run to lean there is the potential of screwing things up , the only way to know for sure if its right is to get on a dyno with AF and have it properly tuned or find some one that did and copy theirs. watch your head pipe if its turning blue you might be on the lean side , spark plugs can also give some indication but not to be relied on .
i would think your using a 142.5 or a 145 main, yes ?
what you have now is about 30-31 hp ,more than enough for trail riding and i dout that any one is really running a way from you .

Thanks for the great advice. I'll look into some of this stuff before I move forward with anything. I'm not a heavy person at all so even a stock z400 has more than enough power to make me hang on tight sometimes.
