Default magneto install

This is really gonna sound like a stupid question. I'm building an 86 230 qs and am having problems getting spark. I tore apart all that has to do with the electric (not much on this quad). I was up north in my buddies garage where we pulled it apart, even yanked the magneto. I tried to put the magneto back on and it won't seat all the way down. when we insatlled it the first time it tapped right onto the shaft, but now it's as if the shaft swole up and the magneto can't slide all the way over it. the key is lined up and the mag slides just to the point that 1/4 of the key is in. I tried tapping it on and it won't move i even tried using an impact gun on the nut a little to see if it would budge the mag on a little more but nothing. I didn't think the fit was supposed to be this tight. has any one had a problem or maybe a solution. I have to cart the quad back up north to my buddies shop to get access to a press, but if anyone has any ideas i can give a shot while i am at home in my shop it might save me a trip. anything would be appreciated.
