ive been outrunning my brother in law for 2 years with my z400 until he bought a 660r. i still outran him due to 120 lb weight difference but then sunk 2k into it now he leaves me setting still. is it crazy to think i might be able mod enough to give a little competition?

Cam, carb, and exhaust mods. You have to get your revs up to have any chance at all. There used to be a 80cc 3-wheeler that had 26hp at 13,000 rpm (or something like that). For reference, the atc 250r had 26 hp stock. 80cc, a third of the size with the same power!

I say 1-up him by trading in the Z for a new LTR, and a couple of mods. With the extra 120 lbs. his pants should get all poopy!

well having a new 4 month old baby in the house kind of puts a limit on the budget, so getting the new 450 is probably out of the question, though it would be nice.

Well, sell the 400 and buy a quadzilla and you'll not only leave him in the dust while pulling a wagon of firewood, but have extra money to put into a college fund for the youngen.

i was actually considering a cam from hot cams, not exactly sure what kind of cam i need or want. i definetly uderstand i need to upgrade the exhaust, ebay should be able to help out with that, wich i guess means i would also have to get it jetted as well. one of the mods done to the 660 raptor was a high comp piston, but i dont know if that would affect dependability. anything getting me to the finish line quicker would be nice but i hate costly repairs.

You need a cam/carb/exhaust system. To get power on the top you need good flow. Bigger carb and better flowing exhaust will make the new cam perform the way it was designed to. Go to a flatsldie carb a couple mm bigger than stock and a kn filter. Then pick a good flowing exhaust, do some research on that. Then get a stage 2 or higher cam. Btw, you may have to look into the rev limiter issue with newer bikes. That may mean getting a new cdi so you can rev out high enough to sail past the 660 (or at least keep up some). I'd say $150-$200 for the carb, $200+ for the exhaust, and $150-$200 for the cam... $500-$600 total. Add a little for BS items like gaskets, shipping, etc. I have no idea what a cdi would cost. Also, keep in mind after all that you won't have much of the low end torque you used to, but the top end will scream.

Otherwise a turbo, nitrous, or a banshee or a zilla is the only way.

I would go with Hotcam stage 1 intake only. Add a slip on exhaust and a good cdi box. That will start to move you in the right direction!!!

If you go with what I suggested , then I would add just one tooth to the front sprocket(lot cheaper than a rear). Add a power lid(k/n) or other. s/o exhaust , hotcam intake stage one. Don't forget to rejet if this is your first mods with the intake and exhaust. Do a little at a time if you can't afford it(starting with the filter and then the exhaust. Then you will get somewhere!!!
