I'm new here so bear with me. I've got a 96 King Quad that won't come out of gear and so won't start. It was running fine as the wife was snowblowing the driveway and she said it wouldn't come out of gear so she could put it in reverse. any ideas short of pulling:frown the whole thing out?!

 

Have you tried rocking it back and forth while trying to shift?

Give some more details? Was it in 4wd? If so sometimes it DOES get hard to get out of gear. How do you mean it wont shift out of 1st /.?? Does the shift lever MOVE and its hard to shift or does it feel loose or what? If you apply the rear brake lever it will let it start in gear

 

It was in 4 wheel drive and yes sometimes it's difficult to get out of gear. The shift lever feels loose and is stuck in first. It feels like it isin't shifting at all but goes through the whole range of motion

 

I also tried starting it with both brakes on and it wouldn't turn over

 

Old style KQ will not start in any gear - it must be in neutral.
