Default Blowin Oil

My buddy has an older 88 or 89 Suzuki 4-wheeler and it is buring oil (smokes BAD), runs erratically at best, blowing oil out the exhaust pipe. I think that it needs a new set of rings and a good teardown. What are your thoughts

It's Quadsport or Quadrunner 230 or 250. Kickstart?? Right?? These engines are known for burning oil. Stong little runners, you can't kill them, but the valve seals go out on them.

Orange n blue??? Gotta be a 85 or 86 quadsport or quadrunner. The 250s was made in 89 and 90 only and came in white n blue as far as I know. And I think the 87 n 88 230s came in white n blue too,,, not sure though.

When I got my 86 it burned oil so bad it clouded the garage and we couldn't see each other after only a few seconds of running it. It blew oil out the tailpipe too. I ended up using a torch to finally burn all the oil out of the pipe after I rebuilt the engine because it was still smoking with fresh rings and seals, lol. The problem is the oil rings wear out so fast, probably due to the long stroke it has, putting a lot of pressure on the side of the piston. The rod/stroke ratio may be a little low too (ie. it probably has a short rod compared to its stroke).

Oh,,, if you want to post your vin I can tell you what each digit means. Or you can just use the 10th digit to find the yr. 85=F, 86=G, 87=H, 88=J, 89=K, 90=L. There was no I, O, Q, U, or Z.

Its a pull start but when it runs it runs strong just smokes so bad after 3 or four seconds it will smoke out a 40 x 20 barn with the garage door open and oil just pours out, wont run for long. could be a little older. I would post the numbers but like I said it isnt mine and I dont have it here its about 25 minutes away. I dont know why im bothering he wont ever fix it, it will just sit in his garage until he tries to ride it and it will smoke and burn oil then he'll b#### and park it. Its a sharp machine wish he'd sell it but there's no chance that will happen, but Property tax time is just around the corner.

Its a case of badly worn oil rings and a side of worn valve seals to boot.

Ohhhh my favorite sounds expensive, as for the bad valve seals how would you replace those? Just lap the valves with the lapping compound or is there more to it? Rings are fairly strait forward tear down top end, replace, reassemble. anything else I should tell him to replace while he's in there. Anything in particular to watch out for? Not mine but possibly could make a little money off of this, ya never know.
