LT230 Smokes bad when running

LETS TRY EITHER 1 OR 2 THINGS 1 THE RINGS ARE SHOT 2 YOUR VALVES ARE SHOT... BURNT VALVES FROM YEARS OF NOT TAKING CARE OF YOUR RIDE OR NOT CHANGING YOUR OIL .OR BREAKING THE QUAD IN CORRECTLY OR THE THE WORST CASE HITTING THE REV LIMITER MANY TIMES OR IF YOUR HEAD HAS OIL ON IT GET A NEW GASKET BUT WHAT I SAID IT IS 1 OUT OF THE TWO THINGS..

Valves are probably shot, but the rings are what's making it smoke like a tar wagon. 100% of the ATV engines I've rebuilt needed a new intake valve. Haven't replaced an exhaust valve yet.
My 230 had a puddle of oil on the piston when I first got it. I put a .060 over wiseco in it and did a valve job and 9 months later I had another puddle of oil on top. My rod is eggshaped and the piston is flopping all over the place inside the cylinder. I've heard that is a common problem to have in these engines.

Well yea its just finding the right quad to fix up instead of one that is not meant to be tampered with, or souped up in other words.</end quote></div>

I too have this problem on my 1987 suzuki lt230. Last spring I was given an 87' Suzuki lt230 that had been sitting ontside for about 4-5 years. After a good cleaning, new battery, and fresh oil it runs great. We road this machine probably 600-800 trail miles since then. Last fall it started to smoke and burn oil. I found on ebay a remanufactured top end rebuild kit for $169.95 that includes a cylinder, piston, rings and all needed gaskets. Is this a good idea??? Also the quad is very sluggish when it comes to hills. Any ideas to help give the machine a little peep without spending ton's of cash???? Thanks, Jonathan: Richmond, Michigan

Is the cylinder already in the jug on ebay? It can be hard to find somebody to resleeve jugs. Probably cheaper and easier to just bore it out to the next size. Just make sure you use a wiseco 10.25:1 compression piston. Make sure the valves are good and the lash is set right. That should give you the pep you're looking for.

Thanks JustRandy! Yes, the kit on ebay already has the cylinder sleeve installed in the jug. I will though look into finding someone that can give me a price to bore out my cylinder. If you have any other sugguestions send them my way. Thanks again!

I bought it from the same ebay store. good deal, except it does not come with a weisco hi comp piston (I had several already, so no big deal))
As far as being sluggish.... Never had that problem, always the opposite!!!
Maybe someone had messed with the gearing?
Sluggish never came into play on my 230 or (anyone I've known that had one) until top speed time!! Guy I know had one that took a quart of oil per day of riding!
We could always know exactly where he was if we got lost!
