you need some sort of impact. I use a slide hammer. It is a 1/2 rod with a threaded end for attachments. Welded an axle nut to a 1/2 nut, thread it on the axle and puller. Give it a tap or two and the axle will pop out.
There is a retaining clip on the male part of the joint that fits in a relief in the axle. You must overcome the holding force of the retaining clip.
There is another way, but it's shadetree and you use it at your own risk. Use a large adjustable wrench.
1) thread the axle nut on at least 1/2 of its threads (using it for a stop)
2) set wrench so it fits over axle, but too small to go past nut
3) hit the wrench with a dead blow hammer
This can work with other things like a pickle fork (used for ball joints).

The service manual says to install a new ring, I used my old rings. I just wiggled and pushed and it popped over the ring. Then I pulled on it to make sure the ring had a grip. The service manual also says to apply grease to the shaft.
Here is word for word how it says to do it in the service manual:
REMOUNTING
Install the drive shaft.
service manuals dont get to detailed on the details, They are written for people with a working knowlege of mechanics.
