Lt250r quadracer runs crappy
#1
Hi Guys,
I havent been on the forum for a while. I just picked up an '85 quadracer 250. It doesnt run too well. It starts in a few kicks, but doesnt seem to rev out. About mid range in the rpm it seems to sputter a little. It doenst rev quick. It has the stock carb and pipe and is basically stock.
I mixed the fuel at 32:1, which seems to be what most people use, but it runs smokey and fouled a plug. The stock recomendation is 20:1.
I cleaned out the carb but didnt have any time to examine the jets or needle clip position.
Any ideas?
Thanks

sounds like carb to me. definately need to check the jets. find out what the sizes are and compare them to what stock should be, sometimes previous owners but dont know what there doing and put in the wrong sizes. plus you might want to check your compression.

That sucks because the last owner said it just recently was rebuilt... Im not sure if it matters too, but it has a different plug than stock. It has a br9es in it.
Thanks for the replies

br8es is stock I think. and a 9 is just a little cooler. maybe had the head milled for higher compression thus needing the cooler plug. do a compression test see where its at. but definitly check the jets for garbage in there.

I have always heared of compression tests, but never have had to perform one. I've always owned four strokes that ran fine on their original piston/rings. Is this something I can perform?
Again, I appreciate the help.

yes very easy. go to napa and get a tester. about 20.00. screw out the plug and screw in the tester. hold full throtle and kick over 3 or 4 times and read the gauge. should be above 120 psi. but if it starts in a few kicks I dont think that is the problem. sounds more like there is crap in the carb and jets. where are you located maybe some one around has a tester and give you a hand

I live in Manchester, NH. I have no problems dropping 20 bucks on a tester, but any local help is also welcome!
My wife told me I had a half hour to work on the bike that day (it isnt kept where I live), so I took the bowl off and sprayed the jets and innerds with carb cleaner then blew them out with compressed air. I didnt find time to unscrew the jets and check them. I definitely will.
Some one mentioned that the timing might be off slightly... is this a possible reason for the lousy running?

So I took the carb apart again and the needle, seat, and jets were all clean. One thing that was odd was that the main jet looked like it was a 300! I'm not even sure if they went that big, but the stock is a 200. The numbers were messed up so I couldnt tell too well. The first was definitely a 3 and the second a 0... the third looked like another 0.
Of course no one has the correct jet locally so now I have to wait. I have a hard time believing it could be a 300 because that is no where near the 200 stock size. The bike does seem to idle fine but bog down in the mid and high rpms, so Im thinking a new jet might help.
This bike is discouraging and I came close to giving up on it. It is missing nuts and bolts all over. The plastic is junk. I opened up the wiring to find splices and crappy fixes all over. One wire from the magneto isnt even there anymore. Im guessing thats why the headlight doesnt work.
Unfortunately I guess I really overpaid for this bike!
