Default LT185 Wont start

i have a 1985 quadrunner 185. When you pull the rope it will not start at all, wont even try. But we pulled it off and everytime we pulled it, it ran fine, but as soon as we quit pulling it, it died. I dont know much about these things i just want to fix it up some because it belonged to my grandpa, so give me any ideas you have so i can check it out. Thanks!

i'll try to help but i'm a little confused about your problem. i know it wont run, you say" you pulled it off " do you mean the pullstart recoil assembly. because then you say it runs fine, then again you say it wont. so i'm not sure what you mean. you should check to see you have spark at the spark plug and see that your getting gas through the carb. let me know what you find. if not sure how to check let me know. good luck.

lol sorry about the confusion. When i say pulled it off, i mean we pulled the 185 with another 4 wheeler. We pulled it in neutral, and when we got some speed i put it in gear and it fired right up, and ran as long as it was being pulled, but when we stopped, the engine stopped. I can see where this is causing some confusion because it has been confusing us for a few months lol. Thanks

lol. when your being pulled can you excelerate when you hit the throttle? it sounds like your plug is sparking. if you cannot excelerate than i would say its a carb issue. but if you can excelerate then i would say its an electrical problem like a coil or cdi. when your being pulled and you put it in gear it forces the stator to spin which sends a spark though the plug. if you hit the throttle and it wont go then gas is not going though the carb. it could be a combo of problems try cleaning the carb real good, all the jets and needles. if it not to much buy a used cdi and coil on ebay. hope this helps

I dont remember whether it would accelerate or not, but i have the carb off to be cleaned and rebuilt anyway. Could you explain to me where the cdi and coil is and how to take it off or out lol. I dont know much about these older atvs with the magnetos and stuff. Thanks

i recently had a lt230, the coil was under my gas tank and if i remember right , so was the cdi, but might be different on the 185. a manual would be helpful to get , they are available on ebay. this would help you with the #'s for testing all electrical stuff. each of the parts are just bolted on.
