Default Jetting

Ok, when i purchased my QS230 it had a dg pipe, uni filter (no lid), wiseco piston, BIG @$$ mikini vm carb, and i THINK thats it. the guy had some insanely stupid ridiculous #230 main jet in it and it shot 1' flames out the pipe occasionaly, and would just shut right down on throttle snap. i got a bunch of long mikuni hex jets which fit but as i found out do not use the same indexing system. so i went and filled one in with solder and drilled it out a good deal smaller and it runs WAY better, but it will still bog (but only when it wants to, get that one!?) on a quick throttle snap open in 3rd, or the shift to 4th. i was just wondering what the main should be around, and ill get a bunch of jets around there.

lastly, if i let it sit for more than 1-2minutes not running, it will flood, WTF?

any help would be greatly appreciated

i also played around with the needle clip position and it has fairly happy midrange and doesnt bog that much, but when it does bog its always at the worst times! haha

Flames shooting out and bogging are symptoms of being lean. Weird how you made the jet smaller and it ran better. Maybe it has something to do with the change of jet style and the soldering and drilling. I'm a big fan of drilling jets, but you have to know the hole is not just a hole, its a little venturi, and by drilling it we make it a regular ole hole. Any idea what carb you have?

well, i know its a mikuni vm series roundslide carb, and its WAY bigger than stock, although im pretty sure its still using the oe intake boot. im gonna say anywhere from 28mm-32mm

i also never need to use the choke, even when its really cold out, possibly indicating a rich mixture?

Hard to tell with those roundslides. They all use the same body, but just have different venturi sizes. You couldn't tell a 32 from a 34mm. Its probably a 32 though.

You could be lean on the main and rich on the pilot. It would start with no choke, but choke out on the full throttle. Rich jetting will still run, it just will be less powerful and will foul the plug. Anytime it cuts out, it means its lean. Next time you have the needle out, let me know what what needle you have. I'm thinking your needle has the wrong taper. If the needle is too fat, sand paper and a decent drill can solve that. OR just buy a richer needle.

Btw, are the valves set right and all that kinda stuff? I wasted hours one time until I noticed the intake valve was never closing. The carb should be the last thing you monkey with.
