NEED HELP ON FINALE DECISION LT 250R

i went and look at a lt 250r and the hubs was welded on the axle and he wants 800.00 now but it seems like it runs rough not any get up and go but everything else seems ok except when you pick up on the rear end the back shock feels like its got some play in it but its either this or look for a dirtbike what is your advice its also and 86 or 87 model not sure but i would appreciate your replies.

Well, it seems like you do have a decision to make. First off, how much, if any, are you willing to spend to repair all the little quirks on the LT you're looking at. The hubs welded to the axle can be fixed, but you will probably need a new axle or hubs after. Second, check to see if the rear shock has all the bushings in all the linkages, or see if the bolt holes in the frame are waddled out. Now for the engine...your guess is as good as mine. A top end job will only set you back about $150 or so, considering all you need is a bore, piston, and rings. If it seems like there's not too much wrong with it, I'd say go for it, cause $800 is a pretty good deal.

look back a few days(30) in this forum in topics relating to people looking at LT250R's they have some things listed to look for & avoid. also there are some threads that relate to what the different years features & distinctions are.

-as for the hubs welded to the axle, when you have to replace a chain & sprocket or axle bearings, you'll more than likely have to get an axle & hubs( which are available used), in addition to the other parts.
-about for the play in the rear shock, it could be that it needs a rebuild, a basic rebuild starts at about $125 and goes up depending on what you need or want done.
- the engine probly needs some TLC, and likely a top end, if not a bottom end too, then again- it may just need some reeds, a spark plug, and the filter changed.

get a service manual before you get into it too deep, so that you have an idea of what you need to do & how. it'll save you nightmares & money down the road.
$800 sound like a reasonable price for what you are describing.

the fast way to tell the difference if its a '86 is: the axle carier is round, if its an '87 or newer, its square...( in stock form)
