I just purchased this quad about 2 months ago off of a guy that I work with. What a great deal it was until I tried to cross a creek. As soon as the quad touched the water the engine shut off immediately. The quad would not start again, so I replaced the spark plug boot (why? because the one that was on their looked like something straight out of McGuyver, a paperclip wraped around the plug with a paper thin rubber boot over the clip and plug. huh?)and it is getting spark. So I took the side case off where the magneto is and low and behold there was about 1/2 an inch of ICE in there. I sprayed WD40 in the magneto and around it and stuck a fan in front, so the magneto would dry out faster. Thus resulting in the quad still not starting (seemed like it it wanted to though, but it just didn't have enough to start.) after about 2 hundred kicks and a bruised foot I got mad and quit. I tried to read the ohms on the CDI unit, most of which gave me readings but I was using a 1991 manual and I found out today that my CDI unit differs from the 91. So I ordered a manual for mine and I am stopping by the motorcycle shop today to make a copy of their ohm chart so I can recheck The CDI unit. Also I checked the ignition coil for a reading and it was negative, so maybe that is the problem. Anyone out there any advice?

my brother had his flywheel key sheared when he bought his '90 lt. it wouldn't run for poop, & needed a full rebuild, new cylinder too.

I have a '85 250r and once i was riding and it quit just like yours. i also checked the CDI box. I ended up taking it to the shop and it turned out it was a sheered key. Then it ran fine. A week later it sheered 2 more. After a considerable
amount of work i found that there was a short in my CDI box i bought one and its worked fine since. CDI boxes are very expencive, you can buy a used one at an atv salvage yard because CDI's rarely break. Hope i helped.

I was having problems with my lt for a while. however mine would start, but would quit running after about five minutes. Then it wouldn't start the rest of the day. A few days later it would start, and pull the same thing. I had the stator rewound by Ricky Stator. They told me it was just a seperation in the stator, and since then it has run excellent. Hopefully it is not your cdi box, considering how expensive they are.

When I bought my 86 lt250r it didn't run. The guy said he was running it in the snow and it just shut down on him and wouldnt restart. I took it to the shop and found out the stator had got wet and fried, so i replaced it and its been running great ever since. A new stator will run you about $200 i bought mine used and installed it myself. Its reall easy to do. Good luck!

Usually when a CDI box goes bad it dies completely. I would check for a sheared pin before I bought a new CDI, if it is sparking and sometimes soundlike it wants to go it is most likely a timing problem.

Another problem you could be having is your flywheel rivets might have sheared. it is hard to tell because the flywheel will appear to be fine but is turned out of time because the rivets were sheared. This was the same thing that happened to my girl friends 85 LT250R. Or like everyone else has recomended the key.
