Default Questions about Eiger oil checking?

Probably a stupid question: How do I check the oil on the Eiger? Do I unscrew the dipstick, wipe it, and stick it back in, or do I wipe it, then screw it in, then unscrew and check?
Also, how much oil do you all usually need after an oil and filter change, I was given 3 quarts, but I don't think this is enough?

You put the dipstick in without screwing it in to check the oil. My '07 takes 3.3 quarts including what the filter holds. I'd put in 3 quarts, run it for a minute or two, shut it off, wait a couple minutes, check it and go from there. Also, make sure it is sitting dead level or it will throw your reading off.
