well so far I've found the vin plate, and I have a lt230s the research I've done has told me that these models were built frim 1985 to 1988 but I havent been able to figure out what year mine is.
I don't even really know if there is a difference, I'm assuming that most of the parts from those four years are interchangable, but I'd like to be sure.

What's the 10th digit of the vin?
There are a lot of small differences. And a couple big ones. 85 and 86 have the eccentric chain adjuster. 87 and 88 have the screw type adjusters. The early yrs were around 309 lbs... The latter yrs are about 30lbs more. The very first of the 85's had a small crankcase... 1400ml I think. Yours is probably 2000ml.
The chain flying off and cracking the mag cover is your #1 concern. Get a new chain and new swingarm bearings ASAP. The covers are like gold on ebay. $160 new.

what exactly is the difference between eccentric and screw type chain adjusters?
and would the crankcase size be stamped on the crankcase somewhere?

well I found the crankcase size stamped on the kickstart side of the engine, says 1400ml, so i'm guessing that means I have a 1985 lt230s,
Is the smaller crankcase a bad thing?
I'm thinking that the 30 lbs lighter will be a good thing though.
thanks for all the help.

Well, 1400 means yours was produced before august 1985. Its a rare find. That's the good part. The bad part is there is a reason they upped the capacity to 2000ml. Not sure exactly, but you can probably guess. Anyway, you have one of the first of the first sport quads.

Well it's been a little while since my last post, but after puttin on a new cam tensioner, rewiring the whole quad, checking the the timing, putting on a carb from ebay, and tinkering here an there it is finally alive!!!!!
I just got the thing running tonight and am so thrilled to say the least .
I haven't had a chance to really do my first test ride, but tuesday is looking promising.
I just brought another 230 back to life, sweet.

I just acquired one of these myself. Someone owed my Dad money and he took the quad and gave it to me. I plan to use it for deer hunting. It's not the sporty model, it looks more utility. Already has the rear rack.
If I may ask, wheredid you find the VIN#? I just brought this home Friday night in a rain storm. Worked on it Saturday but didn't fool with it Sunday. Wouldn't crank a lick. Bought a new battery and checked the oil and it was dry as a bone. Filled the oil bag and with the choke, it starts right up first try. Mine actually has 1500ml stamped on the side as opposed to 1400 or 2000(?)
I REALLY hope this is not a 2-stroke 'cause I didn't mix the gas it looked to be separate. It will run and idle forever as long as the choke is pulled out. If you press the choke in or barely hit the throttle, it dies. I did put it in 1st and reverse and the choke had it idled enough to go in both directions.
Sounds starved for fuel and I know it sat for a year without moving so I'm guessing the carb is gunked up. I noticed the carb had Mikuni stamped on it and I was relieved since I've fiddled with them on Harleys. Then I unbuttoned it some more and this carb is small and different. Are these hard to disassemble and clean? Does the carb sound like my major culprit?
BTW, new guy. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute at some point to earn my keep.
'Preciate it!
