I am a fan of the Honda 450R. This quad is fast and stable. With a couple upgrades look out. Get electric start on whatever you get. I am looking at them and might have one for Christmas. Craigslist (Chicago ) has some nice options for used. Good luck.

gosh, some of these people are terrible at answering questions, here is my opinion:
1. dont get a 2003, they're the first year they made them and they have some bugs, ever notice how many there arefor sale? Im going to get a 2005 ltz 400 for 2500, its liek new here in michigan
2. Warriors: reliable as all hell once you by pass the parking brake switch
3. stop telling him to get a 450, if he is even contemplating a 250, they're too big and expensive
4. 400 ex's are nice and bullet proof, no reverse though, until 2006 i believe
5. dont be afraid to buy a "pricier" ltz, it may help in the long run, an i mean a difference in 500 could mean a difference in 2000 in the long run as far as resale and repairs
6.do adjust the throttle until you work up to the speed, it wont take long and you will get tired of the 250 unless you're 12 yrs old, and people willlaugh at you.
7. WAIT, im sure that people who started selling around NOV and still have in DEC and JAN will reduce their prces, the economy is terrible, people need to pay for heating bills, but not in california tho, lol
8. Good luck, i hope i have good luck with my 05, and i hope you have fun with whatever you get
