pull the spark plug and try again (motor could be hydraulicing). see if fuel or coolant is on top of piston. try rocking quad in gear with plug out.
rule out transmission locked (rolls ok in neutral) (clutch ok)
pull flywheel cover and try to turn motor over by hand with spark plug removed.
otherwise, there is room to pull the head and cylinder without removing the motor from the frame. cylinder may have run too lean and seized.
do these thing and you should have a better idea of what's going on.

I have the same problem, removed cylinder, pistion was slapping the head. What would cause this. guy I got the bike from said he rebuilt top and bottom end. From my inspection he's telling the truth. seals look new hot rod connecting rod piston didnt have carbon build up.piston size 87.00 cool head dome size 62 stamped on side. hot rod connecting rod marked ck 155 only #'s that I can see on the rod. I am a banshee guy dont no much about these machiens. it seems to me the rod is to long (stroked) or the dome is not right. what is the stock bore on these things and what is the largest you could go without having problems? by the way this is the 87 motor. from my understanding lot of problems with crank and head leaking. not sure were to go from her with this thing. cylinder pretty torn up might need to be resleved. I hope this is not your problem pain in the but to get cylinder off. not like a banshee thats for sure lol. took me about an hour. wrenches were a flying if ya no what I mean. dont mean to give you more questions than answers but if any could help me out would much appreciate?

well found out what my problem was. connecting rod bearing went, allowing the rod to travel farther than it should. parts of the rings got in between the piston and head causing the piston to lock up in the cylinder. hope this helps you out some.
