Hard to start, then white smoke from engine
#11
My guess, a combination of a mechanical malfunction and not shutting off the petcock allowed gas to flood the motor. Gas then seeped past the rings and into your crankcase. Is your petcock a manual or vacuum switched? Manual would be "on/off/res" and vacuum would be "res/pri/run".
For starters, I would check the petcock by pulling the fuel line. Gas should not flow when in "off" or with the vacuum petcock, "run or res". If gas flows, your petcock is bad. If gas does not flow I would refill the oil, change the oil filter and check your airbox for pooled gasoline.
If your aoirbox is ok and the air filter is not saturated with gas, remove your sparkplug, GROUND YOUR SPARKPLUG WIRE WITH A JUMPER WIRE and then crank your engine over until clear of excess gas. YOU NEED TO GROUND YOUR SPARKPLUG WIRE TO PREVENT SPARKS SINCE YOU MAY HAVE GAS SHOOTING OUT OF THE SPRARKPLUG HOLE when you crank the motor over.
Once you've done all that, install the sparkplug and try starting before you open the petcock again. If it starts, then open the petcock while the motor is running because the carb bowl only holds enough gas to run for a minute or two. If it dies after you open the petcock, you need to check the float. If it won't start, check the plug to see if it's flooded. If it is, repeat...but don't open the petcock until it either starts or it won't start (and does not flood).
Good luck and the white smoke was probably oil from the overly full crankcase. White smoke (steam) usually means water but for some, it's hard to tell the difference from steam and oil smoke...

That's a water cooled bike right it could be the headgasket and you are just getting coolant in the cylinder and that would he thinning out the oil. Try a compression test. You could also have bad rings which would be causing smoke too.

Wow, you guys are WAY technical, and as soon as my manual, which I ordered gets here, I will do all your good suggestions. But first, I have to figure out what most everything is and where it is. You guys are great! If all goes according to plan hopefully I'll work on it this weekend.
I am hoping it's not the head gasket, and that it is just that the gas has flooded the engine - thus the smell of gas with the oil. Really don't know of it's water cooled or not, but I believe it is.
The gas shut off is manual btw, and I do live outside of Chattanooga. I'll keep you posted.
