Default LTF230G brakes

Recently bought 1986 LTF230G ATV and need to replace rear brakes. The Clymer repair manual says to remove rear axle to replace brakes. Is removing axle necessary or can brake shoes be replaced without removing it. Thanks for any help.....

I have a 94 LTF 250, I just replaced the front brakes. I has to remove the front spindles to replace the brakes. I'm waiting on the rear brakes to arrive before I can speak intelligently about the rear.

As I had not received any responses followed manual and loosened axle nuts on left side (I did not remove the spindle) and slid axle to right enough to replace brakes. It was not difficult at all the hardest thing was loosening the axle nuts as they are rather large. I used pipe wrench to loosen them. Thanks for your response...........
