07 z400 question
#1
i have a z400 with a full system exhaust fmf factory 4.1 with a powerbomb header, big gun rev box, k&n air filter and no air box and i have it jetted to a dj170, here is my question, if i put hot cams in it how much of a difference is it going to make to the bike, and what jetting specs would anyone recomend for the pilot and the main jet? and did i make a good choice in parts?

generally, cams will not make a whole lot more power (unless the stock lift or duration is inadequate), but will move around where you get that power (powerband). in addition, if it is a serious, focused rpm range cam, it MAY run like **** out of the specified rpm range.
for example, a ford 351 windsor will run good at all rpm ranges with the stock cam. put a top end racing cam in it and it will hardly idle, but oh man will it RUN in the higher rpm's.
what cam are you looking at specifically and how do the specs compare to stock?

your going to find that the Z likes hotcams.
when i put mine in i also went to 12.5:1, P&P ,400ex air boot no box ,jetting was 172 and 27 but with a yosh pipe .and it pumped out 38-39HP depending on which dyno i was on.
i have sense up graded to an old style intake ,you may be able to talk me out of my new style hotcam intake .

well i was thinking of going with a stage 1 cam because it will give me more top end and mid range power. well that's what ive been told by the technicians at suzuki.
What do you think i should do to get more top speed and more torqe?

to improve your bottem get a dynatek cdi, gives a much better TQ curve and as well a higher top end ,to 9500 rpm's</end quote></div>
yeah isnt the stock rev limiter pretty low @ like 8000rpm?

The rev box is a cdi controller! and i already have an aftermarket one, mine is just a big gun "rev box/cdi controller"
do you mean that the dynatec cdi gives me more?
I guess im just not understanding.

My dynatek tops out at 10500 rpm but I also put ferrea stainless steel valves,D.I.D 3/4 timing chain and the drz kit. Makes for a nice kit in the pants when you stab the throttle. If your gunna tear into it to put in cams put the drz kit which is a thinner base gasket to boost compression and dual valve springs so you dont float the valves thats a nice upgrade. And when I put an fcr39 carb from a YFZ450 holy cow what a difference. I saw the most improvement in the upper rpm range with hottcams if you go that route be sure to get the shim kit olso.

at one point i had a procon which increased the top rpm ,then on a dyno after a run with the procon we switched to the dyna ,we were down right surprised and pleased with what happend on the tq ,4-5 ft lb increse on the lower end
