It's not going to hurt it to run on "prime" but it will tend to leak fuel if you keep it there.

Does it run on "Res"? Could be it's just clogged, Eigers are known to have some issues with small pieces of plastic in the fuel system.

The prime just allows fuel to fill the bowl. In the on or Reserve mode, fuel will not flow until there is vacuum from the carb. It has a fuel pump in it. I found that out the hard way, see my post on "Eiger wont run after water". Odd place for a fuel pump, but it is what it is.

I had petcock problem like this on my suzuki bandit(motorcycle) the mechanic that fixed it told me it was fine to ride with it on prime just to be sure and turn it back to on when I was finished riding. If not it will fill the bowls.. Mine would run on reserve part of the time and when it started to cut out I would reach down and switch it to prime and it would fix it.

What kind of carb did you have on that bike?
