Default Anyone Tried the "Thermo Switch?"

I found this thing called the "Thermo Switch" on eBay and was curious if anyone has tried it. I kinda need to change my coolant anyways. So what do you guys think, is it bogus?

The only feedback on this item I found was this:

"seems to work good, air from the fan felt cooler than stock thermo switch"

Here's the item:

NEW LTZ400 Z400 KFX400 ThermoSwitch UPGRADE! ADD 3+ HP!:eBay Motors (item 230357448643 end time Jul-24-09 18:19:19 PDT)

I'm going to do a little more searching and see what I can come up with.

The idea of it is a sound one. As long as your engine gets up to temp, keeping it cooler is always a good thing! Would be the same as installing a larger thermostat on your car.

The theory is sound. Running the engine at a higher temp helps with meeting epa regs, although performance does suffer. I ordered one of those things too. We'll see. The only thing is that it will only affect when the fan comes on. If you are constantly moving and air is going through the radiator, I don't know how much of a difference it will make to you. What I'd like to see is a thermostat that will open at maybe 10 degrees or so earlier.

I just got my sport bike (a Z400), so I don't even know if it has a thermostat.

In any case, the thermo switch was only $20. I'll give it a try.

Just run Engine Ice or another high performance coolant and the thing will never heat up beyond full-op-temp which is what you want......

I don't trust anything that says "will add 3 HP in 5 minutes" .....that is probably total bull. I doubt a high capacity radiator would add 3hp so I don't believe this would either.

Would that still allow me to run in the sub-zero MN winters though? I'd hate to have to change my coolant every time the seasons changed.

That's exactly why I started this thread. I needed some proof! Chances are if it worked that good, every company in the world would be offering them.

Engine Ice - Welcome

Well it says it is good to -27F so I think that should be OK for MN...... I use it here in Upstate NY and I've not had any issues. Of course the only way it gets -27F here is if you factor wind chill......and even that is pretty rare.....

I had just looked at that before you posted it. 27 below isn't bad in MN, although the way its been lately....who knows! lol

This review on RM-ATV made me a little nervous:

Terrible Waste of Money!

Comments On Mar 29, 2009:
I have an '06 LTR 450 and I originally used Ford/Motorcaft 50/50 coolant. I switched to Engine Ice to see if I could get it to run cooler but it made it run hotter. The bottle says it's good to -26F but when I tested it with a hydrometer it was only good to +10F.

Most other reviews said they didn't feel much of a performance increase, just maybe a spec cooler running engine.

If I can find it locally, I might get it, but as it stands, it doesn't seem quite worth it from a cost and convenience stand-point.

What a crock of %)#@ to claim something like that. As TonyAngel said, while moving at a reasonable rate, the air flow keeps all cool. But bringing the fan on earlier, in slow conditions, wont hurt. As for a power gain, ask for INDEPENDANT PROOF.
